Spheronization was a term originally coined by Caleva Process Solutions and used by Caleva as a Registered Trade Mark. It is still used as a trade mark of Caleva Process Solutions and other uses are prohibited.

The company "GB-Caleva" has no connection with Caleva Process Solutions.

"Caleva" is a registered trade mark of Caleva Process Solutions Ltd and its improper use without permission is prohibited.

Marumerization is a term which was coined by Dalton Corporation in 1963. the current and more widely accepted as correct terminology is "spheronization".

Why pellets for pharmaceutical formulations?

Do pellets provide a  better therapeutic effect?

Pellets :-

• Are easy to coat
• Are easy to make into formulations that can separate incompatible drugs
• Provide the ability to mix pellets with different release rates
• Reduced risk of dose dumping
• Reduced risk of local irritation in gastro-intestinal tract
• Provide less variable bioavailability
• Particles < 1 mm behave more like liquids in terms of gastric emptying
• Distribute evenly over the gastero intestinal tract

These advantages lead the EMEA to include in one of its regulations (EMEA regulation CPMP/QWP/604/96) the comment shown below....

“The development of single unit non-disintegrating dosage forms is discouraged since their residence time in the stomach is unpredictable and in general longer than disintegrating dosage forms with multiple units of pellets. Therefore, such single unit non-disintegrating dosage forms are liable to a higher risk of dose dumping.”

A better theraputic effect is recognised!
